Vision and North Star
DebtIQ helps members take control of expensive revolving debt by turning complex obligations into simple weekly actions. We earn trust with clear plans, safe execution, and measurable progress.
- North star: Weekly Actioning Members (WAE), a member who completes at least one pay-down action in any rolling 7-day window.
- Funnel KPIs: link success, time to plan, plan acceptance, notification to action, 8 to 12 week adherence.
- Guardrails: complaints per 1k, opt-outs per 1k, data freshness SLO, zero critical compliance exceptions.
Product principles: explain decisions, default to safe choices, and show the reward for every action with honest metrics like interest saved and the new debt-free date.
Over the next 6–12 months, our targets are: increase plan acceptance by 8 percentage points, p50 time-to-plan under 3 seconds, 25% notification-to-action conversion, and at least 99% of balances refreshed within 24 hours, while keeping complaints at or below 0.5 per 1k.
Strategy Pillars
Explainable plans
Avalanche, Snowball, APR-Hybrid with a short 'why', trade-offs, and confidence.
Habit loop
One weekly next action, one tap, and an honest reward: interest saved, months shaved.
Fast, safe data
OAuth, idempotent ingestion, freshness SLO, staged rollouts behind flags.
Focused experiments
Pre-register success and kill lines; optimize WAE, not cosmetics.
Trust by design
Consent, RBAC, audit trail, kill switch, compliance-approved copy.
Value Chain
90-Day Plan
Days 0–30
- •Clarity doc signed by Product, Engineering, Risk, and Compliance (one page: owners, KPIs, guardrails)
- •MVP flow live: link accounts, generate a plan, and show a 'why this plan' explainer; p50 time-to-plan < 3s, p95 < 400 ms
- •Server events shipped: accounts_linked, plan_generated, plan_accepted, notification_sent, notification_actioned, first_action
- •Baseline dashboards in place; weekly decision log and ship notes
Days 31–60
- •Weekly digest MVP; notification to action ≥ 20% in pilot cohort
- •Issuer link-rescue: top three fixes live; link success +5 percentage points on affected issuers
- •Explainability A/B pre-registered; 10–15% holdout for adherence reads
Days 61–90
- •Expand plan types (APR-Hybrid tie-breaker, promotional APR countdown)
- •Automation beta with consent flows and kill switch; zero critical compliance exceptions
- •Cohort adherence reads at week 8 and week 12; roadmap refreshed based on results
PRD & Experiment
Problem
Generic advice does not build trust. Members skip plan acceptance or churn after linking.
Outcome
Increase plan acceptance by 8 percentage points with complaints ≤ 0.5 per 1k and freshness SLO green.
Scope
Plan explainer that shows rules used, trade-offs, expected interest saved, confidence, and a plain English summary.
User Story
As a member, I want to know why this plan is best for me so I can accept it with confidence and start acting.
Acceptance Criteria
- Explainer renders under 400 ms and includes the rule set, trade-offs, interest saved, debt-free date shift, and confidence 0 to 1.
- Primary CTA accepts the plan. Secondary CTA compares plans with a short reason to choose another.
- Event emitted: plan_generated with { planType, interestSaved, confidence, timeFromLinkMs }.
- Accessibility and plain English copy approved by Compliance.
Risks
Misinterpretation, stale inputs, over-promising.
Mitigations
Glossary, conservative confidence, freshness banner and kill switch, copy patterns with do and do not lists.
Rollout
Feature flag, A/B/C variants, success and kill lines pre-registered. Holdouts for adherence measurement.
Scorecard spec
- North star: Weekly Actioning Members.
- Funnel: link success, time to plan, plan acceptance, notification to action, 8 to 12 week adherence.
- Guardrails: complaints per 1k, opt-outs per 1k, data freshness SLO ≥ 99% of balances refreshed within 24h, zero critical compliance exceptions.
Event Schema (server authoritative, idempotent)
- accounts_linked { institutionId, method, result, latencyMs }
- plan_generated { planType, interestSaved, confidence, timeFromLinkMs }
- plan_accepted { planType }
- first_action { action, amount, improves }
- notification_sent { channel } and notification_actioned { channel, latencyMin }
Views
- Scorecards: WAE trend, link success by issuer, D7 activation, notif to action conversion, adherence by cohort.
- Watch-outs: freshness banner, complaints trend, opt-outs trend, slow screens.
Runbook: freshness breach
- Detect: alert fires on freshness SLO or failed backfills. Name an incident channel. Assign roles.
- Protect members: show a red banner and disable actions with a kill switch. Keep viewing enabled if safe.
- Restore: backfill, verify counts against a control table, confirm events are idempotent and ordered.
- Communicate: post a short update, add a support macro, notify stakeholders, and set the next checkpoint.
- Decide and learn: re-enable actions behind a flag, write the root cause and fix into the decision log, add a test or monitor.
Competitor Map
Positioning: explainable plans + weekly habit + safe execution. Most tools stop at visibility.
| Competitor | Explainability | Habit Loop | Safe Execution | Data Quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DebtIQ | ✓ High - Rules + confidence | ✓ High - Weekly actions | ✓ High - Kill switch + SLO | ✓ High - Issuer-grade OAuth |
| Mint / Credit Karma | Low - Generic advice | Low - Passive viewing | Medium - Read-only | Medium - Aggregated data |
| Tally / Undebt.it | Medium - Strategy names | Low - Manual tracking | Low - No automation | Low - Manual entry |
| Qoins / Bright Money | Low - Black box | High - Auto payments | Medium - Limited controls | High - Bank connections |
| Personal Capital | Low - Advisory focus | Low - Quarterly reviews | High - Fiduciary duty | High - Comprehensive sync |
- Most competitors focus on visibility and advice. Fewer deliver a reliable weekly habit with clear explanations and safe execution.
- DebtIQ wins by optimizing for Weekly Actioning Members, using explainable plans, issuer-grade data, and guardrails that make the model durable.
